5 things to do in Izmir
Konak Square is pretty much the central point of Izmir city. It’s close to the Kemeralti bazaar, Konak Pier and most of the shopping areas. It’s also easy to get most forms of transport including ferry, metro and bus from here. Most of the municipal and government buildings are in this area.
The Agora was the largest of its kind in the world in 333BC, when it was established by Alexander the Great. It has been destroyed and rebuilt and today it is an excellent illustration of Izmir’s place in history. It’s located very close to Kemeralti bazaar.
Kizlaragasi hani - this is a great building in the middle of Kemeralti bazaar, full of craft and antique shops. It was originally a caravanserai and was built in 1744. There is a tea garden in its centre, surrounded by cafes, so people can sit and drink cay and kahve. It is reminiscent of the grand bazaar in Istanbul, but less hectic.
Kemeralti bazaar is a great place to go if you are looking for a bargain on clothes, or just enjoy markets in general. Near the Konak end there are a great variety of shops including food and snack shops although, further in, most shops and stalls sell clothes.
Ataturk Museum – this can be found in Birinci Kordon and is housed in a beautiful four-storey house that Ataturk himself would stay in when he visited Izmir. The décor inside the museum is ornate and well-maintained. The museum itself contains a selection of Ataturk’s belongings and photographs, paintings and busts of Ataturk.
